MARY and ELIZABETH Mentoring Relationship
In the biblical story of Mary and Elizabeth (Luke 1:26-46), when Mary received the call to bear the Holy child, she was only a teenager. Though she answered the call by responding, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord," (Luke 1:38) Mary faced a tough challenge: gossip, whispers, and suspicion from people in her village. Mary left to visit her cousin, Elizabeth who was pregnant with the herald of the Messiah. These two women supported each other throughout their journey of pregnancy and fulfilled the mission they were called to do.
As AAPI clergywomen, we understand that serving in ministry can be tough and lonely. Having someone walked with is a huge blessing. Though we may be spread throughout the country, the new technology helps to shorten our geographic distance and makes connection much more accessible.
As a follow up with our theme "Mary and Elizabeth" of the biennial meeting held in San Jose, CA in 2010, a task force team has been formed to plan the development of our Mary and Elizabeth ministry. We feel the best way to start is to have better understanding about those who are interesting in this mentoring relationship. We developed a questionnaire for you to fill out. Please let us know about you and your needs and we will do our best to connect you with an AAPI sister.
In a traditional mentoring relationship, an older and wiser colleague provides wisdom, counsel, and advice to a younger, lesser-experienced candidate. Only one person will benefit from this relationship. However, we believe that mentoring relationship is a two- way street. Information and knowledge flow both ways. Through humility and openness and a desire of mutual growth and ministry development, both the mentor and the mentee will be blessed from each other.
